- Cervus canadensis.
Cairn Cabin. Aug [August] 3/43 [1943]
Shed antlers of large [male symbol]'s all up valley
of Cairn to the pass indicates this to
be a winter range for bulls at
least. Heavy summer [male symbol] population
Food:- Evidence of competition with
moose on willows + with sheep for
the small area of winter + spring
grassland.
Summer food includes heavy
grazing on a composite herb -
specimens collected.
Kills:- 1 Senile [male symbol] - antlers on - Southesk R. [River]
1 " [male symbol] " " creek at
Cairn Cabin.
Census:- Today saw 31 [male symbol]'s + 1 [female symbol].
All males had antlers about mature
+ the small size of antlers compared
with those of Banff Park was quite
pronounced. Even old, large bodied
animals often have 5 points + the
few size pointers lack spread + height
saw 1 large animal lacking big tines.
Most were in 2's + 3's but
we saw 1 group of 5 + another of
8 bulls + a cow.
Predation:- I watched 2 bulls come down
a sidehill on the dead run; I think they
had come over the ridge + whatever scared
them was on the other side. An hour
later as we sat on the peak
