  • Banff. Alta. [Alberta] April 28/43 [1943] Also found year old remains of an old bull, elk, a young elk sex? + a goat. The old bull had died after antler shedding. On Mount Norquay noted the curious absence of any elk sign. Grass on the upper S [South] face is excellent + the sparser growth among the aspens indicates that such is characteristic. Game seen. deer 24 elk 47 [number crossed out] 55 sheep. 4. April 29/43. [1943] Snow + rain intermittently all day with low hanging clouds after a snowy night - 3/4 in. [inches] new snow at Banff. At 8:30 proceeded up L. [Lake] Minnewanka road to examine a dead 7 pt [point] Elk. At 9:30 left by car for Radium Hot Spring in company with B. [Bruce] Mitchell. Road wet on west side of summit but not too bad except for bumps. There met Supt. [Superintendent] Horsey + Supervising Warden [J.J.] Meredith the latter reports 106 dead sheep found. Two sick sheep this year. Herd at head of Cross River not affected. 2 lions working in park during winter. Two elk killed by them found. Very few coyotes in winter, only a few of the sheep were dead [word crossed out] eaten after death.
