- Cowichan Lake. April 26/40 [1940]
he fairly jumped as he
snorted. Next snort
he bounded over knoll
+ out of sight. It was
most interesting to watch
him working himself
up into a frenzy over
a suspected but unknown
danger.
In 5 min [minutes] I was up to
him again. He had run not
30 yards + was again feeding,
but was still nervous
+ looked about more often
+ more intently. At 9:30
he lay down facing E. [East], with
the wind behind him. 20 sec. [seconds]
later he was up again + staring
down hill. Fed for about
10 minutes + at 9:43 lay down
in the same place but facing
the other way.
Stayed lying down until
noon when heavy rain
started + he was seen to
rise + begin feeding again
At 10:20 jumped a doe + yearling
within a few feet of me. I
do not know what alarmed
them but suspect that they
