May 20 [1931]:- Took one [word crossed out] two more Microtus
on the Reef - one large female +
a very small juvenile. Also
took another Pery. [Peromyscus] very dark with
black flanks as in the last.
Set trap for mink - came round
by Chestermans + Garrod's [also Garrard and Mackenzie] beaches
no shorebirds in evidence.
In afternoon we rowed over
to the buoy off Meares Island
and put out two cod lines. Took a
Spotted Sandpiper and saw
a large number of Pacific
loons. Heavy rain in the morning
May 21 [1931]. Went over to Chesterman's
beach again. 3 Harbour Seals
were playing around in the surf,
coming right into shallow water
+ splashing + diving over sideways
bringing one flipper + the entire
hind end of the body out of
the water as it dined.
Caught one peromyscus.
In the evening walked down
the road as far as Hildebrand's. Saw
one Doe Coast Deer. Still in winter
pelage. The Deer here have never
been taken with more than 3
points. Two being about 99% of
those taken. A good sized buck
weighs in the neighbourhood of 100
lbs. [pounds] and average two pointers
