  • Banff. Cervus canadensis. April 25/43 [1943] areas + collapsed reddish blue areas. Upon dissection the former are found to be expanded because the bronchioles are obstructed with lung worm. About 50 to 60% of the lung is thus rendered useless. In all lobes. The worms in the bronchioles are large + very sluggish. Those in the trachea + primary bronchi very active + small. Cervus. 7 cows, 1 calf. April 26/43 [1943] Along the Spray some sign all the way to 15 mile but only tracks of 6 before 12 " then along west exposure counted 80 including 21 bulls 4 of them at least spikes. One larger bull [drawing of bull] with antlers Estimate we probably saw 2/3 of the valleys elk population. Kills:- Found dead 7 pt. [point] bull. Bad bruises on left side - apparently punctured rib - blood clots in chest cavity. Bruises along neck. Very poor - teeth worn but not critical lungs too old to show worm. Been dead some time possibly from fighting injuries. Stomach contents indicate death during deep snow. Stomach:- 100% willow twigs. Coyote + grizzly droppings of Elk.
