- Banff. Cervus canadensis. April 25/43 [1943]
areas + collapsed reddish blue areas.
Upon dissection the former are found to
be expanded because the bronchioles are
obstructed with lung worm. About 50
to 60% of the lung is thus rendered useless.
In all lobes. The worms in the bronchioles
are large + very sluggish. Those in the
trachea + primary bronchi very active
+ small.
Cervus. 7 cows, 1 calf.
April 26/43 [1943]
Along the Spray some sign all the way to
15 mile but only tracks of 6 before
12 " then along west exposure counted
80 including 21 bulls 4 of them at least
spikes. One larger bull [drawing of bull] with antlers Estimate we
probably saw 2/3 of the valleys elk population.
Kills:- Found dead 7 pt. [point] bull. Bad bruises
on left side - apparently punctured
rib - blood clots in chest cavity. Bruises
along neck. Very poor - teeth worn
but not critical lungs too old to show
worm. Been dead some time possibly
from fighting injuries. Stomach contents
indicate death during deep snow.
Stomach:- 100% willow twigs.
Coyote + grizzly droppings of Elk.
