  • Journal. Sawback L. [Lake] July 2, 1943. Left Banff at 10 AM. + rode steadily via mt [mount] Edith trail + 0 mile creek. to Sawback Lake. The trail up mt [mount] Edith is through heavy spruce timber some marten sign. The North shoulder of Mt [Mount] Norquay and the s [south] + w [west] face of mt [mount] Brewster are open + grassy - winter sheep range. All the aspens there show sign of heavy elk winter use. Many beaver meadows + lodges up 40 mile creek about 6 miles from the crossing. This upper region of the 40 mile is moose ground. All tall willows + birch above 3 ft [feet] browsed about 80% short willows lightly or not at all browsed. As you approach the pass the mts. [mountains] on both sides are open + grassy s [south] + w [west]. On the back of the 8636 ft [foot] peak south of Sawback lake we saw 2 goat + on the SW [Southwest] face [James (Jim)] Simpson reports seeing rams in summer. One fishing party last fall reports seeing 160 goat on the ridge NW [Northwest] of Sawback L [Lake]. There is much goat sign around the lake but this evening the only game in sight is 1 cow + 1 buck elk. No sign of
