- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
Banff, Alta. [Alberta] April 24/43 [1943].
Deaths:- Examined 3 elk found dead by
wardens 2 were calves + neither showed
any sign of being pulled down by
predators. The third was too far gone
to tell one way or another - it was an
adult, presumably a bull (-One of the young had bloody foam in nostrils
Two weeks ago a large bull was
found very ill with a bad cough. It
died during the night (bloody foam in nostrils) + the lungs were
preserved in formalin + sent to U. [University] of Alberta
No other elk were found dead in
spite of a thorough traverse of the
Bow Valley in midwinter. However many
more must have done so - witness the # of calves.
Ticks on all examined.
Food:- Stomach contents of two dead
elk in each case 50% grass 50% Jack Pine.
All elk seen feeding were grazing.
Range + migrations:- Usually do not winter
near Lake Louise but this winter
a small band 6 +/- wintered on the
little Pipestone where they were seen
in December + another band of about
6 stayed near 9 mile on the Jasper Highway
Antlers:- All juv [word crossed out] 18 mos. [months] bulls but 1 had
their antlers on still.
Predators:- All wardens here have seen no sign
of coyote killing of elk + are skeptical as to its
happening.
