  • 17 antics. The male stretches himself to his full height and bends the head sharply downward so that the bill almost touches the lower neck which is straight upright. In this position the bird bows up + down chattering loudly all the while. Bairds cormorants + tattler were not common but song sparrows, winter wrens [underlined] + fox Sparrows [underlined] were very common May 22/31 [1931] [note inserted later] The young fox sparrows were out of their nests [underlined] + flying freely. They are much darker in color than the adults, the ground color of the breasts being dirty yellow instead of white. On the way from the Island we headed south and kept out to sea about 3 miles. Here 15 flocks of northern Phalaropes passed the boat all heading West as if they were aiming to make the Queen Charlottes the next stop. They were heading straight out to sea, flock after flock at 5 or 10 minute intervals.
