antics. The male stretches himself
to his full height and bends the
head sharply downward so that
the bill almost touches the
lower neck which is straight
upright. In this position the
bird bows up + down chattering
loudly all the while.
Bairds cormorants + tattler
were not common but
song sparrows, winter wrens [underlined]
+ fox Sparrows [underlined] were very
common
May 22/31 [1931] [note inserted later] The young fox sparrows
were out of their nests [underlined] +
flying freely. They are much
darker in color than the
adults, the ground color of the
breasts being dirty yellow instead
of white.
On the way from the Island
we headed south and kept
out to sea about 3 miles.
Here 15 flocks of northern
Phalaropes passed the boat
all heading West as if they
were aiming to make the
Queen Charlottes the next stop.
They were heading straight
out to sea, flock after flock
at 5 or 10 minute intervals.
