- May 25, 1953 Kinlochewe Rosshire [Ross-shire]
We were waked at 4 this morning by rain
+ the cuckoo was still calling. We drove down to
the ferry landing at Kylesku + waited until 10
o'clock before anybody got around to running
the ferry. We drove all day in the rain
by the coast road through Stoer, Lochinver,
Polbain, around Baden Bay, Achendrean, Ullapool
around Loch Broom + Little Loch Broom to Gruinard Bay.
+ Loch Ewe. then inland along Loch Maree to this
spot, the headquarters of the Nature reserve
here. Here again we slept out by the lake.
+ awoke to a beautiful day. Saw [Sir Frank Fraser] Darlings study area in
the Strathbeg River Valley near little Loch Broom
All [illegible word crossed out] the way along we saw
small areas of blown shell sand over the
sterile native gneiss. Here greensward is most
in evidence also rabbits + too many sheep
cutting the land to pieces so that it blows away.

The trip over from Kinlochewe was fascinating.
In the morning we climbed the lower slope
of Ben Eay [Eighe] and + there saw several
deer, all but 2 stags. All were feeding on the
high grassy benches above the heather belt.
This region is the meeting place of the
eastern + western birds, Betula (occidentalis?)
+ the pendant southeastern type. The grand old
