Shale Banks, Snake Indian R. [river] Aug. [August] 14/43. [1943] Very few moose here. Saw a little winter sign. Deaths [underlined]: Warden [A.H.] White of Decoigne tells me that this year he has seen 2 calves get into difficulties crossing the Miette River. One he helped out but he believes it was too far gone. The other the cow would not let him approach + he is sure it drowned. Cow swam river where there was a steep bank to come out onto. Calf could not get out of river. Little Heaven Summit, Mowitch Cr. [creek] Aug. [August] 16/43 [1943] Moose abundant in meadows near Willow Creek cabin - Warden saw 5 this morning I saw 2 cows. Census [underlined]:- Near our present camp among the burnt timber to our west moose are very abundant In about 2 square miles we saw 16 moose (only 4 cows) + 7 elk.). two other bulls near cabin (one group 6 [male symbol] 1 [female symbol]) About 11 head of game per square mile Signs of wintering in here, shed antlers Antlers:- One bull seen today was starting to strip the velvet. A pair of moose heads that died several years ago with antlers locked 1/4 mile north.
