- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
Bryant Cr. [Creek], July 13/43 [1943]
Elk, including a small calf had been
up the trail ahead of us. Elk tracks
on the trail as far up as Whiteman
Pass trail.
Walter Childs reports seeing a single
bull elk in the valley above
the Bryant Cr. [Creek] Cabin during his
winter patrol 3 years ago. During
the summer he found the
skeleton of one.
Today I picked up coyote pellets
of a year ago containing elk
winter hair.
This last winter 9 wintered
just above the canyon + 6 about
2 miles above this. Both sexes
represented.
These had dealt harshly with
the range as there is no grass
to speak off [of] + willow browse
is the staple winter diet.
Spread [underlined]:- Walter Childs reports seeing
3 elk in Snow Cr. [Creek] pass in summer
of 1931. These were the 1st [first] seen so
far north.
Bryant Cr. [Creek] June 14/43 [1943]
Fresh elk tracks coming from Marvel
lake + Wonder Pass into Bryant Cr. [Creek]
Saw 3 cow elk today N [north] of the cabin.
Kills:- Walter Childs found the remains of
a winter kill below camp on the creek.
