  • Ursus horribilis Banff, Alta. [Alberta] April 27/43 [1943] One bear active up the Cascade valley. Found one fecal mass composed 30% grass + 70% crushed, fibrous roots. Banff, Alta. [Alberta] June 8/43. [1943] Warden E. [Ernest] Young relates seeing a grizzly with a cub - up the Cascade Valley come running at full tilt down the open hillside, pass through an aspen thicket from which a cow elk ran + then crouching low + sneak running enter another thicket from which there was a loud bleating followed by the emergence of 3 cow elk that continued to circle the grove. The cub left far behind + bawling entered the thicket after the kill had been made. Even louder bawls suggested that the bear had hit the young one. The same warden relates another instance of a grizzly seen in hot pursuit of a cow moose. 15 Mile Cabin, Spray R. [River] June 11/43. [1943] The grizzly has entirely cleaned up the large dead elk found here by us in April. At the carcase [carcass] were 4 defecations 2 100% white roots with a thin brown bark + a slightly acid smell. 2. grass + elk hair.
