Abundant sign around mile 20 to 28
but still grass present though all
willows cropped close. Apparently
this range is stocked about to the
limit + there is direct competition
with the moose. Elk go as far up
as Sunwapta where they are not common
Kills [word crossed out] but are in numbers on the Chaha.
Saw a sick calf at mile 22.
Kills:- At mile 23 an adult bull
dead without sign of violence.
Heavy with ticks. Molars worn but
O.K. [okay] Incisors in poor shape - badly
eroded. Animal very emaciated.
Took tip of lower jaw.
At 38 mile a young elk
apparently a wolf or bear kill.
At 42. a 6 pt [point] prime bull
without ticks dead with its
throat torn + the viscera + hind
quarters eaten. Skull saved.
Apparently coyote kill - no sign of wolf.
Stomach contents: 70% Jack Pine 28% Grass
2% spruce.
Census. Total 67 bulls cows + young.
Pyramid Lake. April 23/43 [1943]
13 elk.
Kills One dead juv [juvenile] no evidence.
