breaking over them, backed by green
slopes + the whole set off by the
towering snow capped peaks in
the background.
May 10 [1931] Skinned all day. In the late
afternoon a large flock of
Dowitchers and a flock of about
150 curlew came to the beach
in front of the house, later
these were joined by a fair
sized flock of Black billed Plover.
May 11 [1931] Skinned all morning. In
the afternoon we went into
the village to pick up another boat
Mr Mitchell of Towler + Mitchell's Store
had secured us our seal, a
beauty. We then rowed round
the bay past Hildebrands place
seeing about 40 Bairds cormorants
one Brandts corm. [cormorant] several Pacific
Loons + numbers of ducks.
Large flocks of waders were
feeding on the tide flats. These
were made up of about 100 curlews
40 dowitchers and a great many
Black bellied plover + Dunlin
with a lot of the smaller sandpipers
These birds were very wild but
we took 5 Dowitchers, 3 curlew
+ 2 Black bellied plovers. Several
flocks of all [words crossed out] entirely of Dunlin were seen
Saw Fish hawk.
