[August] 29/45 [1945] Frank Tyler last year saw a coyote pull down a white-tail doe. It ran the deer onto the ice of the river + by heading it off kept it from reaching shore then closed + by leaping on its neck twice forced it down. The second time it stayed down. He has counted as many as 7 kills in a mile of river. Mostly yearlings. Another warden counted 16 kills in one mile. He once found where several coyotes had found a weak elk. They had pulled out quite a lot of hair but the elk had gotten to its feet + run off. Deer are very frightened of coyotes in that vicinity, at least in winter months.
