  • Ovis canadensis Jasper. May 5, 1944. Census:- Saw 7 ad [adult] rams, 2, 4 yr [year] old + 1 3 yr [year] old + 1 ewe at Maligne, + 16 ewes + young on the w [west] face of Mt [Mount] Kerkeslin above [Frank] Wells cabin. He states that 20 or so winter there. Also that 20-30 wintered in the Mt [Mount] Wilcox area. Warden E. [Edward] McDonald on the 3rd [third] saw 51 sheep on the S [south] + W [west] facing hillside two miles above Maligne cabin. Says they wintered there. Jasper. May 6, 1944. Census:- Saw 200 sheep on areas not previously covered. These were seen on the east side of the valley between Jasper + Snaring (70), at the Rocky + Lime kiln (100 less previous 88 = 12); Hot Springs (46 + 7) Tunnel Mt. [Mountain] (65). Sex + age:- The sex and age distribution was Males:- ad [adult] 24; 5 yr [year] - 3; 4 yr [year] 3; 3 yr [year] - 5;2 yr [year] - 4 = 39 [female symbol] incl [including] [female symbol] yearlings - 66 lambs - 23 18 of the ad [adult] [male symbol]'s were seen at great distance in a flock of 52 sheep that certainly included younger rams. This must not be allowed to distort the age classes Condition:- All seen at close range seemed to be in good condition - several lambs were thin + quite small.
