- The whole performance was most interesting
+ almost comic opera in its seriousness.
The door man in morning trousers, cutaway,
dew laps, drooping black moustache, bags under
his eyes + top hat set the style. The
incongruous touch was a red + gold band
around the topper.
At 7:15 I was guest of honor at the
622nd meeting of the Royal Soc. [Society] Dining
Club (about 4 meetings a year). Some 40
of the inner circle gathered in the dining
room beneath the quizzical stare of
Rayburns [Sir Henry Raeburn] beautiful portrait of John Robison.
the first president of the E.R.S. [Edinburgh Royal Society] The dinner
was excellent + the conversation even
better. Prof. [Professor J.] Kendall told me of his meeting
his wife to be during an Atlantic
crossing - in glowing details.
Dinner over my health was drunk
+ a suitable reply dreamed up + the
business of the evening settled down.
This consisted of reports from secretary
+ Treasurer + many anecdotes from the
rest.
Prof. [Professor] Sir W. [William] Wright Smith reminisced about Dad [McTaggart Cowan]
ably assisted by Fergus Hewett. Sir Sidney
Smith, Dean of Medicine old an excellent yarn
about a friend of his who as Bishop of
Jerusalem was returning across the desert
