Weather: Good. warm sun all day,
light N.E. [northeast] wind, mid-day temp. [temperature]
66 [degree symbol] - minimum in previous
24 hrs [hours] 40 degrees.
Plant conditions:- Skunk cabbage just
unfolding. Water parsnip +
water buttercup showing above
pond surface in lower areas.
No new growth in swamps
at main lake yet. Viola
sempervirens [underline] in blossom, also
Ribes Lobbii [underline]. R. [Ribes] lacustre [underline] in
leaf but not in bloom.
Alder leaves up to 1" in length.
Dandelion in blossom, thistles
growing + much new growth
on various grasses.
Food. I observed heavy utilization
of a number of grasses +
fine sedges: no browsing
of coarse sedge, or of Lactuca
muralis tips of newly sprouting
skunk cabbage eaten, also
all leaves of water parsnip Oenanthe sarmentosa
+ water buttercup showing
above the water. This
was quite extensive in
places. Tips of new thistle
leaves, dandelion + Hieraceum
eaten. One plant of Evergreen
Marginalia: Carduus edulis
