Found abundant sign of elk wintering
around Maligne Lake Cabin + on the
sheep sidehill. Saw shed antlers +
2 ad. [adult] bulls. Probably, - from Ed Macdonalds [Edward McDonald]
observations, at least 6 bulls wintered
Tracks show that several others
are moving up at this time.
Enemies:- One [illegible word crossed out] cow killed by an
old grizzly with yearlings near trail
2 miles from W. [west] end of Medicine
lake.

From George Camp learned that 4 years
ago 25-30 elk wintered up the
whirlpool. The range is restricted to
the river bank + he saw the whole
band every time he went by.
The following year there were 50 to 55
