Spray River April 26/43 [1943]
Opposite the cabin saw 6 sheep 4 of
them, at least, old rams. They were feeding
high up - above the elk, in snow
almost to their bellies when there was
lots of grass lower down.
Cascade Cr. [Creek] to 15 mile Cabin April 27/43 [1943].
Saw 19 sheep on slopes overlooking the
Stony Cr. [Creek] Bridge. From abundant sign they
had wintered here. This is evidently
part of the Aylmer Flats summer flock
as they came right to us + licked our
hands + clothes.
Compos [word crossed out] Other sheep 1 old ram + 9 ewes +
young on Grassy Mt [Mountain] + 3 rams on west
rim high up. No doubt the latter were
part of a larger band over the edge on
the W. [west] slope.
Composition of [underlined] herd of 19. =
8 ewes, 4 lambs, 1 [male symbol] 4 yrs [years], 2 [male symbol] 3 yrs [years], 4 [male symbol] 2 yrs. [years]
On adjoining ridge 2 more [male symbol]'s 3 yrs. [years]
After licking our hands + gathering around
us the rams except for 2 2 yr [year] olds went
off together. + the ewes + young stayed
together.
