260 Seeing through a grindstone
Roll up a piece of stiff paper with
one End just large Enough to fit round
the Eye, and the other End rather
smaller. Hold the tube betweent the
thumb and forefinger (do not grasp
it with the whole hand) put the
large End close against the right Eye
and with the left hand, hold a book
or any conveniant opaque body, against
the side of the tube. Be sure and
Keep both Eyes open, and there will
appear to be a hole through the body
and objects are seen as if through a
hole instead of through the tube.
The right Eye sees through the tube
and the left Eye sees the object and
the 2 appearances are so confounded
that they cannot be seperated.

Calabar beans are an antidote for
strycnine. The Calabar is the ordeal
bean used by the negroes of Africa
to determine the guilt or innocence
or suspected individuals. It has
also the power to dilate the pupil
of the Eye, same as Aconite

Waterproof Cement
Powdered clay dried by gentle heat
and mixed to the consistency of paste
with boiled linseed oil. It may be thinned
with turps, colored with ochre and used
for covering metallic roofs

Fill a large saucepan with water put
into it 1 ounce of carbonate of potash
and a quarter pound Whiting. Now put in
all the spoons, forks and all the small
things and boil them for 20 minutes
after which take the saucepan off the fire
and allow the liquid to become cold.

Cement for Stove Oven
Wood Ashes, 10 parts, Clay 10 parts
Quick Lime 4 parts. Mix into a stiff putty

Rust from Nickel Plate
Grease the stains with oil and after a
few days rub well with a cloth wet with
ammonia. If any spots still remain
remove them with dilute muriatic acid and

To Soften & [and] Remove Hard Putty
Caustic Potash (carbonate of Potash) or Lye
is pulverized and mixed wth as much
fresh Burned Lime, also pulverized, which
is Easily done. Make the mixture into a
paste with water, and paint over the
putty until it softens. A little Soft Soap
Keeps it from drying out too quickly
