- Pacific Loon.
Maligne Lake. July 26/44. [1944]
A solitary female Pacific Loon
was collected today as it fed in the
shallow water along the edge of the
lake. Its behavior was totally unlike
that of the common loons seen
in this district. Instead of diving
+ feeding in deep water this bird
worked slowly along in the
shallows - often right up against
the vegetation. Here it submerged
its head for 20 to 30 or more
seconds at a time. Its behavior
reminded one of a Red breasted
merganser along the sea beach.
Stomach contained remains of 4
leeches.
