- July 24 Friday. My birthday. Hot: slept without a sheet. Everyone working normally. Impression is that the Fascist's will surrender, Mallorca being cut off from supplies & the soldiers not being with the Fascist's. Gelat came & gave his account of the D r episode. (He told the Fascist's when they asked for light and said that they might shoot one another. G. said “Then don't shoot so much!” [)] Now it is said that the plane did not drop bombs but was fired at, the anti-aircraft shells falling one in the Captain General's house, one in a barracks, one in the Rambla . Sounds unlikely. Medico proudly showing his door. Bartolomé made a step up by the refuse-pit. Bathed. Saw a warship going to Palma about 5 o'clock. Foreign. A blank day: did Schools . Palma now reported quiet. At night tried to get England on radio but audition bad. Government making progress in south and centre. Dark hibiscus flowering for first time.
