- July 27th Monday. Bartolomé filling in wall near refuse-pit. No more roses, practically, but zinnias and dahlias and carnations for the house. Don Bernardo has decided that all is lost and gone into Palma to get out money from the bank. So has Schw. The camion has to go or it would look like disobedience to the military. Pancho as volunteer has been sent to a barracks far from Palma where he only gets 15 centimos a day. Schools. Note from Millonario that Radio Catalunya is asking for L's whereabouts. Palma was only bombarded with leaflets & news. Saw a copy of Vanguardia dropped by a plane (July 25th). On radio from England heard Government has definitely got the upper hand. (Mola beaten back from Guadarrama) and heavy fighting between La Linea & Malaga. Story of escape of captured hidroplane hydroplane from Mallorca: the pilot pretended it wouldn't fly without a lot of petrol and then soared off. Sugar & coffee shortage; flour & petrol shortage in view. Row with little Antonia for her gluttony. Local carabineros asked by Captain which side they are. They replied “we are wearing Government buttons”.
