- Aug 17. Tuesday. Random House want the $1000 advance of C.F V. back: or set off against some other book. Better weather: but feeling dull & children though sweet sprawl & tire. Wrote 9 pages of Belisarius . Tooth a little troublesome again. In the evening writing-letter game with children. (One of Sam's is opposite.) Wrote to thank Evans for the Belmonte book he sent. A new maid, Marie. Newspapers too disgusting to read: Shanghai, Santander, random sinking of steamer by Italian destroyers, British trade boom.
