XIVThis transcription provides a reconstruction of the partial leaves, used as binding waste in a sixteenth-century book (Muret, Orationes, Venice, 1576). Missing text is supplied to fill an estimated 30 lines per column. Some text on both fragments can be found in the spine, and this has been identified in the boldface headings below, reference to supplied images. “Fragment 1” is the inner cover of the back of the book; “Fragment 2” is the inner cover of the front of the book. Both fragments are from the same manuscript but are not consecutive: Fragment 1 collates with Holy Saturday, and Fragment 2 with Dominica in Albis (i.e., the first Sunday after Easter).For reconstruction of missing text, the fragments were collated not only with modern breviaries (cf. Breviarium Romanum, vol. 2, Kempten: J. Kösel, 1849, pp. 299–332) but also with Assisi, Biblioteca comunale, MS 694 (ff. 135v–137r and 149v–150r). Quotations from Chairman Mao:
The merit of the book Water Margin lies precisely in its portrayal of capitulation. It serves as teaching material by negative example to help all people recognize capitulationism.
Water Margin is against corrupt officials only, but not against the emperor. It excludes Chao Gai from the 108 heroes. Song Jiang pushes capitulationism, practises revisionism, changes Chao [Gai]’s Juyi [Unity] Pavilion into Zhongyi [Loyalty] Hall, and accepts the offer of amnesty and enlistment. Song Jiang’s struggle against [prime minister] Gao Qiu is a struggle waged by one faction against another within the landlord class. As soon as he surrenders, Song Jiang goes to fight [the outlaw] Fang La.
Lu Xun on Water Margin:
Water Margin makes it quite clear that they were not against the emperor, they accepted the offer of amnesty and enlistment when the government troops arrived, and set out to fight other brigands for the state – brigands who did not “enforce justice on behalf of Heaven.” They were lackeys after all.

The Great Leader Chairman Mao recently pointed out: “The merit of the book Water Margin lies precisely in its portrayal of capitulation. It serves as teaching material by negative example to help all people recognize capitulationism.” In accordance with Chairman Mao’s observation, and in order make full use of the negative example of Water Margin, and to expose the true face of the capitulationist chief Song Jiang in Water Margin, we have drawn this pictorial strip, to provide reference materials for people as they unfold the criticism of Water Margin.

His path took him to Jingyang township, and he drank 18 bowls of wine at an inn, and hurried drunkenly to Jingyang Ridge. Exhouseted in mid-journey, Wu Song leaned against a rock and closed his eyes to recover. With a sound like a thunderclap, the king of beasts flew out of the mountains. The tiger had a body the size of a rhinoceros, its head like a wicker basket, as it leaped at him, huge mouth open. Wu Song sobered up from fright, turned a somersault and dodged the tiger; he wielded his club and split the tiger’s cheeks, then brandished his fist and broke the tiger’s nose. With a flying leap, he straddled the tiger’s back and rained blows down on its head. After 35 blows, the tiger that had been terrifying all its life now had no breath in its body. Truly it is said: Paying no mind but embarking blithely on a long journey, He steeled himself and went up Jingyang Ridge, Drunk he came and beat a mountain tiger to death, Winning a great reputation everywhere.

[caption below image] Legend has it that in ancient times there was a village girl of the Zhuang people in Guangxi who was clever, bold, industrious, and beautiful; she loved life and was a great singer, often using her songs to praise labour and nature. She loved freedom and did not fear despots, and often exposed and complained of the exploitation and oppression of the common people by the feudal landlord class, and expressed the aspirations and longings of the labouring people. For this, she won the love and admiration of the labouring people, and everyone called her Third Sister Liu. The picture depicts the scene in which she overcomes in song three scholars sent by the local landlords, making them flee in panic.

Poster 2, left panel, second part of the story: In the third lunar month of spring, Wu Song returned from the Eastern capital, reported to his superiors, and went to visit his brother. How was he to know that when he entered and drew back the curtain, Wu Dalang’s memorial tablet was set up inside the house. With the instigation of [the matchmaker] Old Woman Wang, [Wu Dalang’s wife] Pan Jinlian had formed an adulterous liaison, poisoned Wu Dalang, and to hide their crime they had cremated his body to destroy the evidence and create a false impression. When Wu Song learned the facts he made a complaint but without success. In an uncontrollable age to avenge his brother, he cut off Pan Jinlian’s head, then, grasping his knife, he ran to Lion Hall and had a savage fight with Ximen Qing, cutting off his head, thus removing a horror from the people of Yanggu. Truly it is said: Two heads were presented to the memorial, Wu Song took revenge on his brother’s behalf, From ancient times feeling of outrage must be wiped clean, There good and evil will always be repaid.
