An interview/narrative of Colonel Stanley W. Brygadyr's experiences whilst serving with the Royal Canadian Navy. Interview took place on November 4, 2006.

ABSTRACT: Colonel Stan Brygadyr Interview with Colonel Stan Brygadyr took place on November 4th, 2006 at the participant's house in Victoria, British Columbia. Interview conducted by Titania Guterson. The interview begins with Colonel Brygadyr explaining his two year training as a cadet in the Venture Officer Training Plan as well as two training cruises. The interview then moves on to introducing pilot training and how Colonel Brygadyr went through a program where he received his private pilot's license. Colonel Brygadyr, throughout the interview, recalls incidents that occurred while flying. These incidents include a training incident and a flight to Bermuda. Colonel Brygadyr explains his training and his advanced training which took place in a multi-engine airplane. Colonel Brygadyr moves on to explain how sea to shore to sea duty was suppose to work and what his sea to shore to sea duty was like. Colonel Brygadyr served aboard the HMCS Bonaventure and he explains his time aboard and how he had been sent to U.S. aircraft carriers to do training exercises. Colonel Brygadyr talks about the aircraft he flew, including the Tracker, Argus, and Aurora. He explains what dead reckoning is, what St. Elmo's fire is, and what wind finding techniques were used when instruments went out. Colonel Brygadyr talks about the deployment he was on to the U.K. when the Cuban Missile Crisis began. Colonel Brygadyr talked what this was like and what followed afterwards for him. The HMCS Bonaventure was used as a transport ship to Cyprus for a peacekeeping mission and Colonel Brygadyr explains how the aircraft carrier was completely full of equipment. Colonel Brygadyr makes reference to his time as an LSO (Landing Signals Officer). Colonel Brygadyr moves on to talk about his time training on fighter jets in Norfolk, Virginia. He recalls what it was like to land on a small aircraft carrier and an incident that occurred while he was trying to land. Colonel Brygadyr explains his time as an instructor than he moved to an experimental squadron, VX10. He explains how flying in the North differs from flying elsewhere. Colonel Brygadyr explains what occurred during unification and what happened to the different branches of the military. He also explains what happened to aviation during this time. Colonel Brygadyr recalls an incident that occurred while flying with a General who wanted to fly the aircraft. The interview moves on to talk about an arctic survival course and learning to build igloos. Also, there is mention of sovereignty patrols. Colonel Brygadyr then explains his time at Staff Collage, in the 407 squadron on the West Coast, and in French training. Colonel Brygadyr goes on to explain his different postings and what life was like aboard ship. Colonel Brygadyr explains the differences between training, exercises, and cross-deck evolutions. He explains the difference between other country's procedures and Canada's procedures. He states a philosophy of the way you fight is the way you train. Colonel Brygadyr explains when re-qualifications took place. He talks about the differences among the aircraft that he flew and what the advantages were to each plane. Colonel Brygadyr explains squadron information and the way the squadrons changed over time. The interview ends with Colonel Brygadyr explaining his decision to join the military and how he came to be a pilot.
