Story focuses on Betty, a 60 year old self-sufficient "poor white sister" and "nun of the common world" and how she survives in a "world of waste". This novel is part of the "Scavenger Trilogy", consisting of three novels Fleamarket Molly (December 1978), Garbage Can Sally (April 1979), and Ashcan Betty (February 1980).
