War Diary of 1st Battalion Canadian Scottish Regiment, Vol. 53, January 1, 1944 to January 31, 1944
The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Hilsea Barracks in Portsmith and the Ryde Area, Isle of Wight, England. It has entries about rehearsing ceremonial drills for an inspection and visit from the Princess Royal, participating in various training programs and exercises including one about passing information, a chess and checkers tournament, billet inspections, weapons and grenade throwing training, assault landing training, getting the second out of a series of three typhus inoculations, sponsoring a play called "Flare Play", getting new sniper rifles with a telescopic scope, various sports games, informing the troops what General Montgomery will expect when the "Second Front" opens and that "Monty" has laid down his policy that every man needs to follow, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering orders, strength returns (daily & weekly), training syllabi, administrative memos, weekly progress reports, inspection by the Colonel-in-Chief and the Princess Royal, seating arrangements for the Princess Royal's luncheon map of training area, and a monthly training letter.
