Haro Strait and Middle Channel
Surveyed by Capt. G.H. Richards and the officers of the H.M.S. Plumper and engraved by J. & C. Walker, this map shows the islands surrounding Haro Strait and Middle Channel [San Juan Channel] in British Columbia and Washington State. Detailed relief shading, sketches, and notes show the land cover and land forms. Many places and features are named along with soundings in fathoms in the bodies of water. The islands shown include San Juan, Shaw Island, Orcas Island, Waldron Island, Saturna Island, Mayne Island, Pender Island, Prevost Island, Admiral Island [Salt Spring Island], Stuart Island, Moresby Island, Portland Island, Coal Island, Piers Island, Spieden Island, and part of Vancouver Island. Vancouver Island is labeled with the different land districts indcluding Victoria, Lake [Saanich], Highland [Highlands], South Saanich, North Saanich, and Esquimalt. The channels, inlets, harbours, bays, and sounds are labeled and include False Bay, Douglas Channel [President Channel], Swanson Channel, and Saanich Inlet among many others. Several areas are highlighted in red - some were Reserves while others were referred to as Indian Village. The Reserves shown are Chautlip Indians [Tsartlip Nation: South Saanich 1, Senanus Island 10 and Mayne Island 6]; Saikum Indians [Tseycum Nation: Union Bay 4 Reserve]; Indian Reserve [Esquimalt Nation Reserve]; Quw'utsun/Cowichan Tribes: part of Cowichan 1; Tsawout Nation: Saturna Island 7; Songhees Nation: Chatham Island 4 and Discovery Islands 3; Beecher Bay Nation: Village Island 7, Whale Island 8 and Long Neck Island 9.
