- Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia] June 26, 1939.
Shortly after the fireworks
display near the deer paddock on
May 30 the old doe became
ill, about June 10 she appeared
partially paralyzed, the abdomen
greatly distended, hair sloughing
from the umbilical region.
Upon killing her it was
found that for some reason
her foetus had died in utero
+ the result decomposition
had resulted in a gangrenous
condition. Birth was expected between
June 15 and July 1.
The young doe on June 12 gave birth to twin fawns
a buck + doe. When discovered
the fawns were lying some
distance apart, the doe was
licked clean but the young
buck had not had that
attention. The placenta had
been eaten. The mother
refused to own the [male symbol] fawn
which subsequently died. It
weighed 3 lbs [pounds].
The doe hides her fawn
during the day + stays apart
from it. At 5:15 this evening
it was following her about
+ already eating grass.
