- Contemporary Research, 2023-2025
The following three panels showcase the work of Research Assistants involved in the Colonial Injustices and Current Realities: UVic Research Collective.
“Timelining Colonialism: The Creation of the University of Victoria in BC, Canada” by Shirina Evans (JD/JID student, Law) details UVic’s creation and contextualizes it against the backdrop of Canadian colonial processes. What colonial processes are at play right now in Lək̓ʷəŋən territories?
“Historical Land Title Research at the Land Title and Survey Authority (LTSA)” by Emma Bowick (PhD student, Geography) and Kate Mix (JD/JID student, Law) focuses on the history of the Gordon Head campus land titles.
How does property ownership legitimate or obscure colonial processes? What alternatives would promote just relations between Universities and the Indigenous nations whose lands they occupy?
“HICR Annotated Bibliography: Artistic, Oral, and Written Resources of Historical Injustices and Current Realities” by Shaelyn Wabegijig (MA Alum, Indigenous Governance) presents local Indigenous voices on these lands, waters, and legal systems. How might your education or research shift if you centred the intellectual and creative contributions of local Indigenous peoples?
Additional research from CICR: UVic RAs includes:
Colonial Injustices and Current Realities Digital Repository, assembled by Babak Ashrafkhani Limoudehi (PhD Student, English). This is a digital repository that archives research conducted by members of the CIRC: UVic Research Collective. In addition to the student research noted, it includes interviews with faculty.
“Selected Stories Behind the Naming of Buildings at UVic” created by Manya Juneja (undergrad, Computer Science) stems from a VKURA undergrad research award to explore the histories embedded in UVic building names. Its infographic shows how campus commemorative practices are far from neutral: they often valorize settlers at the expense of Indigenous presence and governance. Who do we choose to honour? Whose stories remain untold?
