- All vaccinium + philadelphus
bushes are heavily browsed.
Game Warden Wier reports that
they are eaten for the most
part in the late spring.
In many places the elk
had excavated holes 1 to 2
ft [feet] deep + 3 to 5 ft [feet] long
in the soil + litter about
the bases of the old spar
trees or anchor trees
used by the loggers. No
explanation for this was
evident - not beds, + had
not been rolled in, had not
been rubbing on the stumps.
This year several old
bulls were seen with
antlers late in February.
One was found in a
small clearing in a hole a
spring had kept free of snow,
here it had stood off
several wolves. It showed
fight when closely approached.
