- Phocaenoides dalli [underlined]
Dall's Porpoise August 11. 1939.
Laredo Channel.
Ran out into Laredo Channel off Kent Inlet and
picked up a school of Dall's Porpoise almost
immediately. They started to play around the boat
+ Mr [Thomas T.] McCabe shot one with a load of shot
from his 12 gauge. After a short chase we
succeeded in gaffing + landing this animal.
We spent all afternoon trying to pick them
up but were unsuccessful. Only once or twice
did they start to play about the boat again
+ then only for two or three short rushes.
Laredo Channel August 12. 1939.
Ran up Laredo Channel again to-day + almost
immediately had the porpoise start to play
about the boat again. Mr [Thomas T.] McCabe shot one
and after a short chase during which the
wounded animal rose + blew every minute
or even less [word crossed out] more often we came up on him
blowing + rising every ten or twelve
feet + very feebly when only about
50 feet from the [illegible word] of the boat it
rolled + disappeared never to be seen
again. Apparently sank, ded [word crossed out] dead, after
the last feeble roll.
Otter Channel. August 14
We again struck porpoises in Otter Channel
off Campania Island shore. They came readily
to within thirty feet of the boat but
would not come closer. On account of
the bad light we could not see them under
