144 Pickle for Meat
To 1 gallon of water, take 1 1/2 #bs [pounds]
Salt, 1/2 #b [pound] Sugar, 1/2 oz [ounce] Salpetere [saltpeter]
1/2 oz [ounce] Potash. In this ratio the
pickle can be increased to any
quantity desired. Let these be
Pickle boiled together, until all dirt
for from the sugar rises to the top
Meat and is skimmed off. Then throw it
into a tub to cool, and when cold
put in your beef or pork, to remain
say 4 or 5 weeks. The meat must
be well covered with pickle, and
should not be put down for at least
2 days after Killing during which
time it should be slightly sprinkled
with powdered Salpetere [saltpeter], to remove
all the surface Blood. Some people
do not boil the pickled, but it is

Decalcomania Varnish
For a fastening varnish for sticking the
picture to the object take 5 oz [ounces] Canada
Balsam (Balsam or Fir) and 1 oz [ounce] Each
Decalomania of 90 per cent alcohol, and spirits
Varnish turpentine. Mix thoroughly and let it
stand a few days. For finishing,
use White Dammar Varnish or a
Varnish made of Bleached Shellac 2
drams dissolved in 10 oz [ounces] Strong Alcohol.
