A cloudburst struck Chimney Lake today
Chimney Lake Aug. [August] 13/48 [1948]
Returned to Alkali Lake and completed
driving it. The weather was
windy with thunder + heavy rain
that made the birds hard to drive
Nonetheless we had a successful
operation:
Broods were hard to distinguish
because big masses of ducks were
moving together but I did identify
Gadwall 3 [female symbol]'s + 7 yng [young]
Goldeneye [female symbol] + 4 yng [young] (3)
Redhead [female symbol] + 6 (3)
Scaup: [female symbol] + 6 (2) [female symbol] + 8 (1)
Canvasback [female symbol] + 8 (2)
Holboels, Horned + black-necked grebes
all nesting on the lake.

Worked near camp. My baited
trap on Chimney L. [Lake] pond took 8 ad [adult] [male symbol]
mallards.
In a small lake NW [Northwest] of there
(3rd [third] lake) I noted 4 [female symbol] scaup
+ Goldeneye [female symbol] + 6 (2)
Bufflehead [female symbol] + 6 (2)
Several teal + mallard partially moulted
but still flightless skulked in the
reeds.
