Single sheet parchment, two seal tags with extant seal wrappers (but no seals). Two tags bear traces of small, red-wax seals, but seals are missing. Parchment seal covers (scraps with traces of writing on interior) remain. Secretary hand. Signature of John Machon on recto. One sheet of parchment with jagged top edge, part of a larger sheet on which the ‘indenture’ would have been copied out twice, the indented edge serving as a proof of authenticity of the two parts when brought back together. The item is in very good condition, although there is slight smudging on the upper and lower left of the sheet, as well as some minor fold-related damage near the middle. The text is ruled in plummet, with one vertical rule marking the left margin of the text block. Pricking is visible at both left and right margins. -- description from Ken Streutker, 2016

Writing is in a late Elizabethan secretary hand with a distinctly flowing, messy quality, likely the result of an overloaded pen., Main text in black ink on one side with various notes written on verso., A single sheet of paper, folded into eighths., and Lower right corner of the paper is cut and folded in, with a small, red wax seal pressed between this fold and the main sheet. Possibly the personal sealof William Hanum, as his signature appears partially over top of this feature (suggesting a sort of authentication procedure).

It was unfolded and placed under slightly raised glass for three days but still proved difficult to work with.Due to the fragility, we were hesitant to further unfold and compress the item under glass. There are areas that are unreadable due to shadows and/or folds. After consulting the archivist, the decision was made to scan only the front page.Scanned on Betterlight/TTI at 600 dpi TIFF (1/15; 230; bent5 tone; height 900) by PD. Metadata by KD.
