Robin Skelton Collection

Robin Skelton was born at Easington, East Yorkshire, England. He received a B.A. and M.A. from Leeds University and taught English Literature at Manchester University from 1953 to 1962. In 1963 he and his family emigrated to Canada, settling in Victoria. He was appointed Associate Professor of English at the University of Victoria that same year and later founded the University of Victoria Department of Creative Writing. He continued to publish books of poetry, fiction, the occult and literary criticism. He died in Victoria.
This collection features Skelton's correspondence. Skelton's correspondents include T. S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Robert Graves, Margaret Atwood, Earle Birney, Bonamy Dobree, Paul Theroux, Kathleen Raine and many others.

- Part of a collection of correspondence to Robin Skelton from Thurairajah Tambimuttu, a critic, editor, and publisher, well known for founding the “Poetry London” and Poetry London - New York” magazines, as well as establishing two publishing houses. Tambimuttu also wrote poetry. The letters primarily discuss poetry, publishing, and Skelton’s contributions to Tambimuttu’s various publishing enterprises. In this letter, Tambimuttu thanks Skelton for sending some poems and asks if the publisher of Skelton's first book would be willing to sell 200 copies with the Poetry London - New York imprint. Tambimuttu also writes that any poems sent should not have been already published in England, and declares that it is worth Skelton's while to send only new poems because Poetry London- New York pays more.
