Provincial Industrial School for Boys and Girls of the Province of British Columbia Collection

This collection is comprised of annual reports for the Provincial Industrial School for Boys of the Province of British Columbia and the Provincial Industrial School for Girls of the Province of British Columbia. Youth attended the schools when committed by juvenile courts under the Juvenile Delinquents Act for having committed offences. Child welfare authorities administered the schools. The Industrial School for Boys (sometimes referred to as BISCO) was located in Port Coquitlam from 1922 to 1954 until it was replaced by the Brannan Lake Industrial School for Boys in Nanaimo. The Industrial School for Girls was created following the Industrial Home for Girls Act was passed in 1911 and in 1914; it was located in Vancouver from 1914 to 1959 when it was moved to Burnaby.

In this collection the Annual Report of the Provincial Industrial School for Boys date from 1924-1947 and the Annual Report of the Provincial Industrial School for Girls date from 1934-1940. The reports provide statistics about youth who attended the schools, such as offences committed, sentence length, place of residence, place of birth, details about their parents, as well as insight into the activities and finances of the schools.
