- Ad physiologum
- Description:
- Contains 25 chapters of the Physiologus, a study on animals and their behavior, (Greek text and Latin translation), and a homily of the feast of Psalm Sunday (Greek with Latin translation). The "Ad physiologum" consists of Greek original and Latin translation interspersed with Ponce de Leon's Latin commentary. "Beati Epiphanii Episcopi Cypri In die festo palmarum" consists of Greek original and Latin translation on opposite pages. Coll.-vert. C. Ponce de Leon; coll. (P. Angelius Bargaeus; F. Sagerius; Symeon Metaphrastes Logotheta, s.). The ascription to Epiphanius has been put in doubt by the fact that several other Greek and Latin churchmen have been mentioned as the author, none of whom has been authenticated. Cf. K. Krumbacher. 12. Shakespeare's Second folio, 1632
- Title:

15. Shakespeare's Fourth Folio, 1685 [Copy 01]
- Title:
- Shakespeare's Fourth Folio, 1685 [Copy 01]
- Description:
- The Fourth Folio, published in 1685, included the same 43 plays in the same sequence as the Third – and indeed exactly echoed its claim on the title page to have “added” 7 plays “Never before Published in Folio.” These were in fact also reprinted from the Third Folio. As in the Second and Third Folios, the Fourth once more made abundant changes to the text of Shakespeare’s Third Folio, on which it based its copy. The Fourth Folio would be used as the basis of the first modern edition, Nicholas Rowe’s 1709 Works The Fourth Folio in turn served as the base for the series of eighteenth-century editions of Shakespeare's plays. Nicholas Rowe used the Fourth Folio text as the foundation of his 1709 edition, and subsequent editors — Pope, Theobald, etc. — both adapted and reacted to Rowe's text in their own editions. -- [from auction clippings] Contains introductory pieces of writing by John Heminge and Henry Condell (actors in the King's Men) and L. 17. Georgius Secundus, Dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rex
- Title:
- Georgius Secundus, Dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae, Franciae et Hiberniae Rex
- Description:
- The manuscript is a legal document relating to lands in Lyme Regis (UK). The document was originally created for the heiress Sarah Andrew. What makes the document interesting is that Henry Fielding, the novelist, was in love with Sarah Andrew and tried to abduct her or elope with her, but was physically prevented by Andrew Tucker and his son John. The fracas in question is the source of a major incident in Tom Jones, just as Sarah Andrew is said to be the model for the heroine of that book, Sophie Western. Sarah in due course married the son of Ambrose Rhodes and is buried in the church in Lyme Regis. The owner of the document, Prof. John Tucker is the descendant of Andrew Tucker, mentioned in the document.

19. The Beasts Confession to the Priest : on observing how most men mistake their own talents
- Title:
- The Beasts Confession to the Priest : on observing how most men mistake their own talents
- Description:
- First published in Dublin by Faulkner in 1738; according to the title-page, "Written in the year 1732." This edition contains a "Preface," and an "Advertisement" which reads as follows: "The following poem is grounded upon the universal folly in mankind of mistaking their talents; by which the author doth a great honour to his own species, almost equalling them with certain brutes; wherein, indeed, he is too partial, as he freely confesseth. And yet he hath gone as low as he well could, by specifying four animals: the wolf, the ass, the swine, and the ape; all equally mischievous except the last, who outdoes them in the article of cunning. So great is the pride of man!"

- Description:
- A collection of Jenner's three treatises on vaccination: An inquiry, &c. &c. -- Further observations on the variolæ vaccinæ -- A continuation of facts and observations relative to the variolæ vaccinæ. The main work was originally published in London in 1798. 'Further observations on the variolæ vaccinæ' (pages [65]-139) and, 'A continuation of facts and observations relative to the variolæ vaccinæ' (pages [141]-182) were separately published in London in 1799 and 1800, respectively. Plates engraved by William Skelton after his and Edward Pearce's designs; coloured by W. Cuff. Inscription on page i (first half-title): "Wm. B. Rogers to A.D. Gale - July 1834". William Barton Rogers, former owner Dr. P.K. Rogers' second son, established the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Former owner Dr. Patrick Kerr Rogers was an Irish physician who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1798, and who published papers in defense of smallpox inoculation (variolation) in preference to vaccination. His consulting library was formed of medical and technical works from his own collection.
