  • Big Brown Bat - Eptesicus fuscus? [correct latin name] March 17 A specimen was captured in the basement corridor of the main Legislature Bldg [building] and brought unharmed to the museum by Art Sherman of the forest Branch. The bat [male symbol, inserted as postscript] was placed in a chalk box with the lid almost closed (all but 1/4" [inch]) + left on desk in office. On afternoon of 18th bat was reported to have escaped. It apparently levered the lid up slightly + squeezed through the crack. Bat was discovered in the evening of the 19th hanging behind the blackout paper on the office window. Still there on the morning of the 20th By 2 p.m. it had worked its way down the blackout curtain about 12" [inches] + while being observed it let go + commenced flying around the office, attempting to hang up in various corners On two or three occassions [occasions] it flopped onto a chair or on the floor. At these times it would cling to a bix extended to it + when elevated would again fly. After about 4 flights - each one shorter than the preceding one - it eventually lay panting on the floor. Bat was then placed back in the chalk box where it scratched around for about 1/2 hour before
