- living in such squalor. The kitchen + pantry
are worst. Stocked with papers, boxes,
sacks, dirty pans + dishes, bits of honeycomb
string + just junk. The sink is chipped
+ dirty - the taps caked with chicken mash
+ the chickens themselves wander in +
out in company with 3 cats.
Jacks [Rev. McWilliams] study was a library equivalent
littered with papers, books, pictures clipping
+ a liberal dusting of cigarette ashes
over the lot. Cold + damp even in
August - in December it must be
like an igloo. Doors + windows always
open.
Joyce [Cowan] manfully mastered her repugnance
+ pitched in to help Alice [nee Mackenzie] who is a
very good sort. The Drawing room is
comfortable + our room really quite neat +
tidy except for a pair of large muddy boots
conspicuously beside the fire place.
There is a water shortage + not even enough
cold water + no running hot water
Aug [August] 13. Tynron. I spent all morning talking bird
books with Jack [McWilliams], he is extremely well
informed in ornithological bibliography. The
rest of the day we loafed. Garry [Cowan] has been
hot on the trail of butterflies + tonight has
a peacock + a red admiral on the board.
