- April 29 [1941] (Ballingall Is. [Islet] Contd [continued]) - Among the cormorants
flying about the islets when disturbed
were noted several with conspicuous
white patch on flanks - are these
Pelagic cormorants? No eggs were seen (YES [postscript])
in nests examined. Fucus used in construction.
Left Ballingall about 12:30 + arrived
at Yellow Is [island] 14 miles south about 2:30. There
we took pictures of courting glaucous-winged
gulls, fidgeting of rivals, wild flowers on
islet - (Sea blush, Camas + Chocolate lilies)
gull nests in typical places (NO eggs)
Also pictures of Red wing blackbird +
Calif. [California] murre on shore. Arrived Cowichan
bay about 6:45 + left for Victoria.
Birds seen on trip [all underlined]
Western grebe - large numbers; 500+ in one flock
S. [south] of Active Pass
Harlequin - 6
White winged Scoter - many
Surf scoter - several
Horned grebe - many
Guillemots - many - one in winter plumage
Glaucous Winged Gulls - on Ballingall + Yellow Isl. [islets]
Bonapartis Gull (?) [Bonaparte's Gull] - Several in Active Pass.
Also 2 seals - several porpoises.
A.A. Sherman reports Dr[?] Bisett saw 30 ft [foot] basking shark off
Crofton about April 15. Also Stacey caught cormorants
on set line in 30 fathoms of water.

Sherman reports seeing Turkey buzzards [aka turkey vulture] (3) near
Saturna Island a few weeks ago.
