COVER
Dish d. 33 cm, Yongzheng (1723-1735)
This extremely fine polychrome dish is elegantly decorated with a pair of crested songbirds with heads lifted in chorus perched on slender peony branches. The large heavily petalled open blooms, decorated in famille rose enamels, range from a milky pink to a deep pink on the buds and newer flowers. A decaying branch is shaded in pink and yellow. This scene is encircled by a double band in black and gold, a black cell-diaper pattern, a continuous frieze of flowers amidst gilded foliage scrolls, and finally a trellis border on a lime-green ground.
