May 30 [crossed out] 29/42 [1942] Made two hauls with seine near
lake outlet catching 1 black crappie
(Pomoxis nigro-maculatus) + 1 cohoe [coho salmon]
fingerling in 1st haul + 2 crappies
in the second.
Colours of living crappies as follows -
back, head to tip of snout Dusky green-blue
Lighter scales Verdigris green +
light sulphate green
Lighter areas below lateral line - Pale greenish yellow
Eye - pupil, blue black. Iris: pale " " [greenish yellow?]
Dorsal, Anal + Caudal; pale orange yellow; dark
markings: antique green. Rays of caudal orange -
chrome. Pect. [pectoral] light greenish yellow also rays of sphere
Crappies are somewhat sluggish;
easily caught in hand + handled. The
three were kept in 5 gallon can over-
night.
Catfish [underlined] were seen dead in
large numbers along the edges of
the lake. Eight were seen within
a radius of 10 feet. Possibly
100 were seen in areas covered. Most
were of one size group - about [space left blank]
inches long - but a few were small,
possibly yearlings. All had patches of fungus + signs of hemhorage [hemorrhage] under skin
of belly + sides. One live but sick
