- Mammals - Lac la Hache area.
Microtus [underlined] [vole] - Common in field along
irrigation ditch, along with Zapus [jumping mice].
One trapped by tail had dug itself a hole completely
covering itself except for tail portion in trap. Trap
chewed on corners in attempt to escape.
Deer [underlined] - Common; seen on three occasion
to date (July [2 or 3, written over each other]). One adult + 1 fawn (still spotted)
seen on Hayfield road, July 4
Moose [underlined] - Common. Nearby even in
summer. Such much signs.
Weasel [underlined] - Common; tracks numerous in snow.
"Just as many as ever" G.F. [Forbes]
Trapped every year.
Mink [underlined] "Not near as many as used to be.
Along creeks containing fish. Also eat
muskrat." [Forbes]
Otter [underlined] "None right around here now, used
to be many years ago". [Forbes]
Bear [underlined] "Plentiful. More noticeable in
spring when there are dead carcasses + in fall
when there are berries" [Forbes]
Cougar [underlined] None known. Perhaps
back in hills. A steer once came
in with back torn apparently by cougar.
