- Humming bird [underlined]
May 30/42 [1942] In cutting down 3 old cedars
at Smith Falls Hatchery the men
found a humming bird's nest in the
first on the lower most [illegible word crossed out] branch. The
nest + limb fell, breaking both eggs;
embryos were well advanced, feathers
showing.
The female kept returning to the
tree apparently looking for the nest +
appeared much disturbed.
May 31 [1942] A nest was found near the uppermost
branchlet of the lowermost limbe of a cedar
on the west side of the highway into Cultus
Lake, 50 yds [yards] south of old overhead
logging railroad crossing.
The nest contained two young just
ready to fly. Nest and young were
removed to lab where the birds took
flight on release alighting on windown
still or floor. Typical humming sound
+ squeaking was made. Plumage well developed
bust nesting down still present on breast.
The birds were made into specimends.
Compared with the nest taken the previous
day this one was much wider in diameter,
the size being increased by the activities of
the nestlings.
