  • River in the early afternoon, bringing with him a goose, a jay + a saw-whet owl. as the major results of his 3 days down there. Excellent stuff. The most interesting thing is that our pole trapping technique for the owls works. In the evening we went down to the marsh 4 miles S [South] of here + while there heard several owls + shot a large buck deer in excellent condition. The owls were most elusive + did not offer a shot. Saw 6 phalaropes on way to Alliford Bay, 1 falcon, 3 Baird Sandpipers, 1 golden plover, 5 semipalmated plover, 10 or 12 western sandpipers. Sandspit. Aug. [August] 21/46 [1946]. Mr Fairly drove us down to the marsh in mid morning + we set out 23 pole traps + brought in the deer. It had been partially eaten by a black bear which we saw there. Saw 2 tree creepers, 12 chickadees, 6 Hairy woodpeckers, 10 kinglets, 1 falcon 5 geese, 5 mallards, 6 wrens + 2 jays Took 1 jay, 1 tree creeper + 5 chickadees.
