- Ascaphus (contd [continued])
that feeding took place when no one was
watching.
Most of the time the toad sat in
the water with only the upper third of the
body above water. Occasionally he
was seen on the moss. At all times
he was placid, not easily frightened
+ immobile.
On Dec [December] 20/41 [1941] he unexpectedly took
a worm offered to him on forceps by
H. Pegler - The first thing he has
been seen to eat for over 3 months.
Dec [December] 29/41 [1941] Ascaphus ate another fairly large worm,
taking the food while in the water according
to H. Pegler.
Jan [January] 3/42 [1942] Ascaphus ate one worm + 2 maggots
Jan [January] 12? [1942] " [Ascaphus] refused to eat
Jan [January] 18/42 [1942] Ascaphus ate 4th worm
" [January] 21/42 [1942] Specimen made two attempts to swallow a
medium-sized worm but each time the worm
struggled free. Each attempt was similar
to that of other frogs + toads: worm was
captured by a snap of the mouth; position of
the worm was changed by thrusts of the fore-legs;
toad attempted to engulf the worm by short
jerks of the body forward but worm crawled
out of the mouth + escaped.
