I. McT. [Ian McTaggart] Cowan 1935. Victoria, B.C. [British Columbia]
Sept [September] 18, 1935
Today made a circuit drive from
Victoria up the Island Highway to
Mill Bay, thence west up Millstream
Creek for 4 or 5 miles perhaps less
+ north [word crossed out] south again down a
side road. We then took an old
skid road up through a burnt over
area, growing up in places with
second growth deciduous types +
along the road with broom.
About 1/2 mile from the road
is a small lake supporting
quite a growth of water weeds.
Shores almost impenetrable as
a result of logging debris, but
grown up with alder + willow,
some cedar at south + west
sides. The country to the east of
the lakelet is typical arbutus -
Douglas fir, salal undergrowth.
Fir trees large + well spaced,
arbutus forming groves.
100 + juncos in one flock
50 + chickadees
6 golden crnd [crowned] Kinglets
20 + nuthatches
1 Mountain Quail
2 Creepers.
3 Mallards
1 Blue-winged teal
3 Squirrels-
